Eco-Shelter, doing business as Ocean, is a Tacoma, Washington building-materials company that manufactures engineered bamboo panels as a low-carbon substitute for wood panels and corrugated metal roofing. Its patent-pending panels come in standard 4' x 8' sheets made of over 90% bamboo sourced from Indian farmers, and are marketed as stronger and stiffer than wood and more moisture-resistant than standard OSB. The company developed the material with Washington State University's Center for Composite Materials and Engineering under a National Science Foundation STTR Phase II award of roughly $1 million. It sells into two markets at once: architectural and commercial interiors in developed markets, and affordable roofing for low-income households in India.
